The Ogun State Police Command has arrested Adewale Arojah, identified as the son of a prophet, for allegedly impersonating a prominent cleric on Facebook and defrauding several victims of more than ₦18 million under the guise of offering prayers and spiritual assistance.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, saying the arrest followed a complaint filed on October 3, 2026, by Muyiwa Akogun, popularly known on Facebook as “Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun.”
According to the police, Akogun reported the matter after members of the public alerted him to fraudulent activities allegedly being carried out in his name through a cloned Facebook account.
“Upon receipt of the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer, Ilaro Division, immediately detailed intelligence and detective operatives to track down the perpetrator,” the statement said.
The police said sustained technological monitoring and intelligence analysis led operatives to a village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro/Ibogun axis, where the suspect was arrested.
During interrogation, Arojah allegedly confessed to impersonating the cleric on Facebook.
Babaseyi said the suspect admitted to using Akogun’s identity to issue fake prophecies and provide supposed prayer services to vulnerable individuals, defrauding victims both in Nigeria and abroad.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect systematically targeted victims seeking spiritual assistance on the said prophet’s Facebook page, gained their trust and swindled them of funds amounting to over ₦18 million,” the police said.
The suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
The command said the investigation would determine the full extent of the alleged offences, uncover any possible accomplices and facilitate prosecution where necessary.
Babaseyi said the arrest demonstrated the command’s efforts to tackle online fraud and identity theft across Ogun State.
“The swift arrest highlights the Ogun State Police Command’s resolve to dismantle online fraud networks, curb identity theft, and deny cybercriminals safe space to operate across the state,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, Bode Ojajuni, commended the Ilaro operatives for their vigilance, tactical discipline and swift response.
Ojajuni also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting residents from both digital and physical threats.
The police urged members of the public to exercise caution and conduct proper verification when interacting with religious leaders and other public figures on social media platforms.
