SPOKESPERSON EXPLAINS KANO GOVERNOR’S CASUAL OUTFIT IN PARIS

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf sparked widespread discussion on Friday after appearing publicly without his signature red cap, just days after defecting from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governor attended the Paris International Agricultural Show in France, where he is engaging in activities to promote agricultural partnerships and attract investment to Kano State. His red-cap-free appearance quickly drew attention on social media, with supporters and political commentators questioning whether he had symbolically distanced himself from the Kwankwasiyya movement, long identified by its distinctive red cap.
Yusuf rose through the political ranks under the mentorship of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, becoming a key figure in the Kwankwasiyya movement, which boasts a strong grassroots base in Kano. His election as governor under the NNPP was seen as a consolidation of the movement’s influence, but his recent defection to the APC represents a major political shift, prompting realignments among party structures and supporters.
Reactions to the defection have been mixed: some loyalists pledged to follow Yusuf to the APC, while others reaffirmed their allegiance to Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya fold. Political analysts described the move as one of the most consequential developments in Kano politics in recent years.
Friday’s appearance without the red cap was interpreted by some as a subtle political signal, though others viewed it as a personal style choice.
When contacted, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, dismissed claims of political messaging. “It is just casual dressing. The governor often removes the red cap when he is outside the country,” he explained, citing a previous instance during the governor’s Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. Muhammad emphasized that foreign engagements often call for attire suited to protocol and setting, and insisted there was no political undertone to the governor’s Paris outfit.
Despite these clarifications, the strong cultural and political symbolism of the red cap in Kano ensures that Yusuf’s latest appearance continues to generate discussion among supporters and political observers alike.
