A 22-year-old man, Abdulmalik Bakare, and two others were reportedly killed when suspected cultists attacked Oreta community in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

The deadly incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has resulted in the arrest of six suspects, according to the victim’s father, Tunde Bakare.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Bakare disclosed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) handling the case had assured the family that a thorough investigation would be conducted.

“The DPO promised that the matter would be properly investigated,” he said.

Residents of the community were still reeling from the attack when journalists visited the area on Sunday, with fear and tension lingering in the aftermath of the violence.

Preliminary findings suggest the attack may have stemmed from an earlier dispute involving a trailer driver and a group of suspected hoodlums along Gbogbo Road.

A resident, Fasasi, alleged that armed men riding motorcycles stormed the community at about 8 p.m. and opened fire indiscriminately.

According to him, trouble began earlier in the day when some youths reportedly intercepted a trailer transporting a container and demanded money from the driver. The driver allegedly insisted that his employers had already paid N350,000 to certain individuals at a nearby junction.

Fasasi claimed that during the confrontation, one of the youths who climbed onto the trailer was accidentally trapped under its tyre and died.

“The police said the matter had been resolved and treated as an accident,” he explained.

He further alleged that some youths later regrouped and launched a retaliatory attack on Oreta community.

“They arrived on motorcycles and began shooting. Abdulmalik was preparing to close his shop when he was killed. A physically challenged child who was eating nearby was also shot dead. The attackers vandalised shops and shattered glass doors. Another victim who had come to buy fish was also killed,” he said.

The identities of the other victims had yet to be officially confirmed as of the time of filing this report.

Residents said the attack sparked panic across the community, forcing many people to flee while business activities were abruptly halted.

Attempts to obtain a response from the Lagos State Police Command were unsuccessful, as calls and text messages sent to the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, were not answered at the time of reporting.
