US President Donald Trump is expected to warn at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday that Washington will deploy its “unmatched” military power to protect American interests in Latin America.
According to excerpts of his speech released by the White House, Trump is set to declare that the United States will not allow perceived threats to establish a foothold anywhere in the Western Hemisphere.
“The United States will no longer permit threats to America to gain a foothold anywhere in the Western Hemisphere. And if necessary, we will use our unmatched military might to secure the vital national interests of the United States,” he was expected to say.
Trump is also expected to accuse Cuba of cultivating ties with left-wing groups in the United States.
The US president is scheduled to meet interim Venezuelan leader Delcy Rodriguez on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly later Tuesday.
His address is also expected to touch on the war in Iran, with Trump arguing that the United States had to act to prevent what he described as the “vile regime” in Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
He is expected to link the issue to the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas, which is backed by Iran.
The remarks come amid heightened tensions between Washington and several governments in the Western Hemisphere and could further signal the Trump administration’s willingness to use military power to pursue US strategic interests.
