The Chief Magistrate Court Grade 1 in Jalingo, Taraba State’s capital, has convicted three individuals arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) for arms trafficking.

The convicts — Sakina Garba, Ali Gono, and Ibrahim Abdulrashid — were each sentenced to 10 years in prison without an option of fine. Their arrests occurred between January and February 2026.

The sentencing coincided with the case of Halima Haliru Umar, a woman arrested by DSS operatives and facing a Federal High Court in Abuja. She pleaded guilty to illegally possessing 302 rounds of live ammunition.

The Taraba State arrests followed intelligence that exposed the suspects’ plan to transport arms and ammunition from Bantaje village in Wukari LGA for delivery to a known bandit leader. Security sources revealed that the suspects were intercepted along the Wukari-Jalingo road, concealing the weapons in two sacks of food items.

The recovered items included one AK-47 rifle, 984 rounds of 7.6mm ammunition, 105 rounds of 7.82mm ammunition, 14 AK-47 magazines, three POS machines, and N200,200 in cash.

In Abuja, after DSS presented the 302 live rounds recovered from Umar, she pleaded guilty. The trial judge, Justice Haywa Joseph Yilwatda, adjourned the case to May 8, 2026, for sentencing. DSS witnesses detailed her arrest in Plateau State while attempting to courier the ammunition to a notorious bandit leader, submitting the ammunition, investigation reports, statements, and seized cash as evidence.

A security source noted, “These operations highlight the DSS’s ongoing efforts to disrupt arms supply chains connected to banditry and terrorism across Nigeria.”
