FPEDL CALLS FOR UNDERSTANDING OVER ANAMBRA POWER CHALLENGES LINKED TO NATIONAL GRID

The management of FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company Limited (FPEDL) has explained that the recent poor power supply in Anambra State is due to a nationwide drop in electricity generation, emphasizing that the situation is not unique to the state.
In a press statement, the company’s Head of Communications, Izunna Okafor, appealed for public understanding, acknowledging the inconvenience caused to households and businesses.
He said: “We appreciate the concerns of our customers across Anambra State regarding the significant reduction in electricity supply in various communities. We fully understand the disruption this causes to households, businesses, institutions, and industries.

“As the entity responsible for distributing electricity in the state, it is important that we provide clear and factual explanations to the public about the current situation.”
Okafor explained that the drop in supply is primarily due to a significant decline in national power generation, which led to a reduction in the allocation to Anambra by more than 50%. This necessitates load management (rationing) to ensure electricity reaches all areas.
He clarified: “FirstPower wishes to stress that the current supply shortage is not peculiar to Anambra State and is not due to any operational failure by the company. We operate solely in the distribution segment of the electricity value chain, meaning we neither generate electricity nor control the volume transmitted to the state.”
On the issue of estimated billing, Okafor noted that metering remains a key challenge, with only 40–45% of customers in Anambra currently metered, leaving 55–60% on estimated billing.
“To address this gap, the Federal Government launched the National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP), funded by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to provide prepaid meters free of charge through distribution companies. Under this initiative, 13,000 meters were allocated to Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), the Southeast regional network. FirstPower received 5,960 of these meters and has distributed them to customers, particularly those on the Awka, Obosi, and Onitsha feeders.”
