There is no country of the world that has developed by neglecting their agricultural sector. People need food to live and the earlier the governments of today start looking for ways to make agricultural produce more affordable the better. In Nigeria today most agricultural produce are produced in rural areas and the factor of transporting to urban areas and still make a fairly decent profit for farmers comes into the fore as transportation uses fuel which is affected by international prices.
Rural-urban migration is on the rise and whether we like it or not, it is affecting the number of farming hands on our farmlands, which leads to the factor of technological inputs into farming. Mechanized farming is the way forward and our farmers need to be trained in modern ways of food processing, packaging, and storage. If the people eat unhealthy food it would affect the general health of the people at large.

Certain economies of the world are largely dependent on farming. Farming as a business is also an essential aspect that must be taken into consideration given the fact that it is impossible for people to survive without food. The benefits of diversifying the economy is essential to the overall growth of any economy. A country like Nigeria is gradually embracing farming even though the impact has not been thoroughly effective but it must be said that it is a positive step in the right direction. Lagos state government has already started production of rice and selling to the people at subsidized rates a move which has been generally applauded by all and sundry.
Although there is still much that needs to be done, we must understand that progress is a slow process and to get to the desired goal of self-sustainability, we have to go through certain due processes that can be sometimes painful and hard, but the efforts we put in today would help future generations.
There are various types of farming types namely poultry farming, pig farming, fishery, animal rearing and so many other methods. We can go on and on but if the development that we aim at is to be achieved we have to source for new information, create an enabling environment that supports farmers.
Farmers should get access to loans, insurance and other forms of support that can help them grow their businesses. We need to have a farmers union, this union can help in product pricing and regulating the quality of the produce so that the farmers can enjoy the benefits of their hard work.
