EU, UNICEF Intervenes To End Agony of Perennial Water Crisis In Ezenifite, Anambra State.
The agony of perennial water crisis suffered by the people of Ezenifite Community in Aguata LGA of Anambra State has been put to an end by the European Union and United Nations Children Funds.
The laudable intervention of the foreign aides which has provided clean and potable water to the community through Rural water supply and sanitation Agency has evidently reduced the incidences of water bone diseases and typhoid fever that over the years  plagued the community.
Villagers expressed happiness that the era of traveling distances to fetch water from the other towns has ended.
Correspondent, Linda Ike who wrote this specil report monitored the development in the State where the villagers including pupils in the community heaved a big sigh of relief from the compulsory demand of the authorities to always bring water to school.
It was noted that Anambra state is among the six States in Nigeria that have poor access to clean water based on available statistics indicating that most of the communities still drink from streams and ponds.
Most affected are Anambra East, are: Idemili, Aguata and Nnewi North LGAs where there are no pipe bone water.
The EU/UNICEF however determined to end the unpalatable story in the 21st Century by delivering sustainable water supply and sanitation services to Ononaku Umuoji, Ezinifite Community in Aguata LGA of the state.
This was basically subsumed in the four strategic  objectives of UNICEF/EU to increase access to safe and sustainable water supply services for 1.5 million underserved people with equity in the rural communities of 20 self-selected LGAs in the six focal states.
The Representative of Rural water supply and sanitation Agency- (RUWASSA), Mr. Victor Eze who spoke recently at a media dialogue on WASH with UNICEF in Awka revealed that Anambra state has no running pipe bone water in the state, stating that EU, UNICEF and the state government have been helping in providing water in the communities.
He further disclosed that government of Anambra state recently signed a contract with South African firm to managed water in the state.
Also, the Secretary, Water, Sanitation and hygiene Community Unit at Ezinifite, Mr. Christian Ike  and a kinsman, Mr. Joseph Okorie who expressed gratitude for UNICEF /EU said before now on the project in their community, the villagers were provided with surface tank and wells, adding that most of them struggled to fetch water from the neighbouring towns.
While pledging the community’s continuity to secure the project they also stated that security men have been employed to monitor the project at nights so as to avoid vandalization.
Also the Headmistress, Mrs. Francisca Onyebuchi and a pupil in the community explained how the water project increased the enrollment in the school, punctuality and regularity.
In the meantime UNICEF has extended its assistance to promote sanitation and hygine in the rural areas of the six  focal states, Anambra, Cross River, Jigawa, Kano, Osun and Yobe , ensuring clean pipe bone water is sited in the communities.
