After bandits attacked the Abuja facility where he was being held, the whereabouts of suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari have generated controversy.

According to earlier reports, gunmen assaulted the custodial center on Tuesday night in the Kuje local council of Abuja’s Federal Capital Territory.

Some prisoners are alleged to have fled during the raid, which lasted hours.

Famous convicts and suspects, including past governors and ministers, are housed in the Kuje jail.

According to officials, over 900 prisoners are housed in the facility.

“He hasn’t been spotted by us today.” He did not attend the customary Subhi (early morning) prayer. But I’m not sure what’s going on, “a source inside the jail told our reporter.

Another officer, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed that as of 09.30am, he was still unsure of Kyari’s whereabouts.

I’m positive he is not gone and that he did not flee. But I’m not sure exactly where he is, “the official admitted.”

Kyari is not missing, according to Umar Abubakar, the Nigerian Correctional Service’s spokeswoman.

According to Abubakar, Kyari has not been relocated from the Kuje prison.

He remains in our care. He experienced nothing. “He hasn’t changed,” he said over the phone while speaking with journalists.

In a statement released early on Wednesday, Abubakar said that the service’s armed unit, working with other security agencies, responded to the attack.

“Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje stormed by gunmen,” read the statement.

“I wish to confirm that some yet-to-be-identified shooters attacked the Medium Security Custodial Center, Kuje, in the Federal Capital Territory at approximately 2200 hours,” it said.

“However, as a result of quick action from members of the Nigerian Correctional Service’s Armed Squad and other security organizations stationed at the Custodial Centre, order has been restored inside the prison and the situation is under control.

“Additional information will be made available soon,”

About 600 detainees broke out of the Kuje Correctional Center after the attack on Tuesday evening, according to Mr. Shuaibu Belgore, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, who paid a visit to the facility to corroborate this information.

More than 300 of the prisoners had been retrieved, according to Belgore.

He surmised that the shooters attacked the building in order to free their terrorist accomplices.

The authorities further stated that during the incident, one individual passed away and three others were hurt.

On March 28, 2022, the Federal High Court in Abuja issued a transfer order for Kyari to the Kuje Correction Center.

After the court denied Kyari’s request for bail as well as those of his co-defendants, Justice Emeka Nwite issued the order.

The four members of Kyari’s Special Intelligence Response Team for the Inspector-General of Police were denied bail by Justice Nwite, who also mandated their custody in the Kuje Correctional Center.

On March 7, Kyari was charged with FHC/ABJ/57/2022 together with four of his coworkers as the first through fifth defendants.

The five police officers were charged with conspiracy, obstruction, and selling 17.55 kilograms of cocaine at the same arraignment as Umeibe and Ezenwanne.
