The alleged rape of three underage students at a Community Junior Secondary School in Ilorin was the subject of an arraignment on Tuesday before a Kwara State Magistrate Court by a 67-year-old herbalist named Saadu Alabi and a man named AbdulGaniyu Haruna.

It was claimed that Saadu and Haruna, a 38-year-old friend of one of the victims’ fathers, frequently had sex with the girls.

The two were accused of engaging in improper sexual contact with children in violation of section 31(2) of the Kwara State Child Right Law.

According to a police first information report, the suspects are suspected of engaging in multiple sexual encounters while pretending to be able to perform invisible charms with children under the age of twelve (also known as Afeeri).

According to the police report, a member of the International Federal of Women Lawyers reported the incident and said Abdulganiyu, who lives in the same neighborhood as one of the victims, had had multiple instances of carnal knowledge of her in his room.

The report stated, “On July 20, 2022, around 1500 hours, a legal professional with the FIDA branch in Ilorin received a call from the SUBEB Secretary, Ilorin, informing them of a case involving one older man having sex with three schoolchildren, all of whom were 12 years old.

The three juveniles (names withheld) who confessed that the accused had sexual contact with them on several occasions were later contacted by the police, who moved into the investigation. One of the victims (name withheld) went on to say that Saadu Alabi, age 67, of No. 8, Arobi compound, Okekere, had promised to perform an invisible charm (Afeeri) for them after learning that one Abdulganiyu, a close friend of her father, had been engaging in sexual activity with her in his room on several occasions.

The two suspects’ pleas were not taken when the case was mentioned in court because the court lacked jurisdiction over the subject.

However, Abdullahi Sanni, the prosecutor, told the court about the ex parte motion that was attached to the police report, urging the Magistrate to grant the prayers contained in the motion by ordering the suspects’ remand.

The trial Magistrate, Mr O. A. Idiagbon, in his short ruling ordered the remand of the suspect in the Federal Correctional Custodial Centre, Ilorin till August 4, 2022 for mentioning of the case.

Counsel to the suspects, Usman Omotosho said that the court could only take the cognisance of the matter but could not try it for lack of jurisdiction.
