Gabriel Jesus scored his first goal for Arsenal in a 4-2 victory over Leicester on Saturday, while Manchester City sailed to a commanding 4-0 victory over Bournemouth.

All of this weekend’s Premier League games required water breaks due to the extreme heat in England, but at the Etihad, it was City who were on fire as promoted Bournemouth were thoroughly defeated.

Erling Haaland’s home debut ended in a goalless draw, but the Norwegian demonstrated he had more to offer than just goals by using his power to slide Ilkay Gundogan in for the game’s first goal.

Before Phil Foden made it 3-0 just before halftime, Kevin De Bruyne grabbed center stage with a spectacular finish with the outside of his right foot to find the far corner.

After the break, City slowed down, but 11 minutes from time, Jefferson Lerma assisted himself into the goal, giving City a two-goal advantage.

Jesus left for City in part due to the acquisition of Haaland, and the Brazilian is already seeming like a steal for the Gunners after marking his home debut with two goals and two assists to keep Arsenal’s unbeaten start.

Jesus was frequently used in wide areas by City manager Pep Guardiola in recent seasons, but he was recruited to Arsenal to play as a number nine in order to guarantee a spot at the World Cup later this year with consistent games as a center-forward.

The 25-year-old broke Leicester’s defense with a deft chip over Danny Ward, displaying his eye for goal, then added another goal by heading in a corner at the back post.

By scoring on their own goal, William Saliba gave Leicester a lead against the odds.

However, the Foxes swiftly dashed that dream when Jesus set up Granit Xhaka to score by slotting home after Ward sent a straightforward cross into the area.

James Maddison’s shot slid under Aaron Ramsdale at the opposite end, resulting in yet another goalkeeping blunder that allowed Leicester to score.

Gabriel Martinelli shot into the far corner before Jesus hit the post with the chance to complete his hat-trick, but Arsenal once more recovered quickly to escape a tense conclusion.

As Aston Villa defeated Everton 2-1 to get the season started, Steven Gerrard prevailed in the first managerial matchup between him and former England teammate Frank Lampard.

After a record of only two victories in their previous 12 games, extending back to last season, goals from Danny Ings and Emi Buendia helped to relieve some of the burden on the former Liverpool captain.

Everton’s Lucas Digne’s own goal gave Everton hope, and Anthony Gordon was twice denied by Emi Martinez, so Villa had to survive a tense conclusion.

Leeds blew a 2-0 lead at Southampton, missing the opportunity to join City and Arsenal on six points.

At St. Mary’s, Rodrigo’s two goals gave the visitors the upper hand, but goals from Joe Aribo and Kyle Walker-Peters may have kept Ralph Hasenhuttl in his position after rumours this week suggested he may be the first Premier League manager fired this year.

In a 0-0 draw at the Amex, Brighton and Newcastle were unable to capitalise on their strong openings from the previous weekend. Both teams squandered numerous opportunities.

At Molineux, there was no scoring between Wolves and Fulham as Aleksandar Mitrovic saw Jose Sa save his late penalty with the chance to win it for the visitors.

Later, when the Red Devils visit Brentford, Manchester United hopes to launch Erik ten Hag’s managerial tenure

Cristiano Ronaldo makes his United debut after being benched for the team’s 2-1 loss to Brighton at home the previous weekend.
