Months after leaving the nation, Shakira, a Colombian artist better known by her stage name Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, will be the subject of a fresh tax investigation in Spain.

The singer of “Hips Don’t Lie” has already been accused of tax evasion in 2022. If found accountable for failing to pay 14.5 million euros in taxes between 2012 and 2014, the 46-year-old might face imprisonment in Spain.

She will go on trial later this year and, if convicted, could receive a prison sentence. She has refuted the claims, claiming in an interview with ELLE that she wasn’t living in Spain during the time in question.

Another new investigation has been launched against the celebrity with just a few months until her trial, which will start in November.

An Esplugues de Llobregat court in northeastern Spain said on Thursday that it has given prosecutors permission to look into two potential Shakira tax fraud allegations from 2018.

The singer’s legal team responded to the reports by stating that she has not been officially notified of the new investigation.

A statement shared with Reuters read in part, “The singer’s legal team will not make any comment until the notification reaches her through the formal and legally established channels. Shakira is now based in Miami and she will have to be notified personally at her new address,

“As she has already stated on numerous occasions, Shakira asserts that she has always acted by the law and under the advice of the best tax experts. She is now focused on her artistic life in Miami and is calm and confident that her tax affairs will be resolved favourably.”

The singer moved from Barcelona to Miami with her children in April 2023, after a messy break-up with ex-boyfriend and FC Barcelona player, Gerard Pique.
