OGUN RESIDENTS URGED TO END PLASTIC POLLUTION AS NES MARKS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

The Chairman of the Nigeria Environmental Society (NES), Abeokuta chapter, Alhaji Badmus Jamiu, has urged residents of Ogun State to take decisive action against plastic pollution to foster a cleaner, healthier, and safer environment.
Jamiu made the appeal in a statement issued on Thursday to commemorate the 2025 World Environment Day, themed “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution.”
He acknowledged that while plastic plays a significant role in human activity and sustains millions of livelihoods, its environmental impact is severe due to its non-biodegradable nature.

“Plastic remains in the environment for a very long time and poses hazardous threats, especially to aquatic life, which eventually impacts human health through the food chain,” he stated.
Commending the Ogun State Government for its Blue Box Programme, Jamiu described it as a commendable waste management initiative that residents should adopt. He encouraged households to sort their waste and sell recyclable plastics instead of discarding them indiscriminately.
“Our people should separate plastics from other waste for onward sale to recyclers near them. This not only generates income but also protects the environment,” he added.
Jamiu also called for stricter policy enforcement to curb the indiscriminate dumping of plastic waste and advocated for increased environmental education across both rural and urban areas in the state.
He concluded by wishing residents a peaceful World Environment Day celebration and reaffirmed the NES’s commitment to promoting sustainable environmental practices.
