Ahead of the June 12 Democracy Day celebrations, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Owohunwa Jimoh, held a high-level meeting with leaders of fifteen Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to ensure peaceful conduct across the state during commemorative events and planned protests.
The meeting, which took place at the Lagos Police Command Headquarters on Tuesday, centered on maintaining peace, law, and order during the Democracy Day festivities and ensuring that public safety is prioritized.
According to Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, half of the CSOs confirmed their intention to join in national celebrations, while the other half stated they would engage in peaceful protest activities. Both sides assured the Commissioner that their events would be peaceful and conducted in a lawful manner.
The CSOs agreed to converge at the Ikeja Under-Bridge and proceed jointly to Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota, which has been designated as the sole protest venue. No other protest will be allowed elsewhere in the state.
The Commissioner of Police emphasized the need to prevent the disruption of public peace, free traffic flow, and the potential hijack of demonstrations by miscreants. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting both celebrants and protesters, urging Lagosians to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
