Tragedy struck the Nkiendowro community in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State on Wednesday, as gunmen ambushed and killed four persons, including a nine-month-old baby.

It was gathered that the victims, two women, one man, and the infant — were returning from their farm where they had harvested tomatoes, which they intended to transport to Farin-Gada market in Jos, when they were attacked near a bridge close to the Tegbe-Nkiendowro axis.

Two other individuals sustained injuries in the attack and are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.

The incident was confirmed by the spokesman for the Miango Youths Development Association, Joseph Chudu, who decried the continuous spate of killings in the area.

“It’s heartbreaking. Just yesterday, four people including a nine-month-old baby were killed. They had finished picking tomatoes on their farms and were about to leave when they were ambushed and killed,” Chudu said in Jos on Thursday.

He expressed deep frustration over the persistent insecurity, lamenting the lack of accountability and justice.

“I don’t know the kind of democracy we are practising. People are being killed every day, yet the perpetrators are never brought to book. We have reported the matter to the security agencies, but the killings are just too much,” he added.

As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, Alabo Alfred, could not be reached for official comment, as his phone line was switched off.

The community has once again been plunged into mourning as residents call for urgent government intervention to end the cycle of violence in the region.
