Several individuals have been hospitalised following the collapse of a building in the early hours of Thursday along Adeniji Adele Road in the Isale Eko area of Lagos Island.

The incident prompted an immediate response from operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Nigerian Police, and other emergency agencies. Victims trapped beneath the rubble were successfully rescued and transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.

LASTMA confirmed the development in a statement posted to its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, noting that rescue operations were ongoing while traffic in the area was being carefully managed.

“There is a report of an overnight collapsed building along Adeniji Adele road, at Isale Eko. LASTMA personnel, other emergency responders and Men of the Nigerian Police Force are all on ground,” the agency said. “Traffic flow is currently not affected along the corridor as our personnel are firmly at the location for traffic monitoring. Victims rescued from the building have been taken to the hospital for treatment.”

Though the exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed, the affected site has been cordoned off as search and rescue efforts continue.

To ensure free movement around the location, LASTMA disclosed that traffic had been diverted. “Our officials have diverted traffic from Zenith back through Oba’s Palace to make use of Enu Owa to their various destinations,” the statement added.

While the cause of the collapse has not yet been officially determined, experts have long warned of structural weaknesses and the dangers posed by aging buildings in the densely populated area.
