The Sokoto State Police Command has arrested a notorious bandit, Buba Magaji, and recovered a high-powered AK-49 rifle with live ammunition in a major breakthrough against the Lakurawa bandit syndicate.
According to a statement released on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, the arrest was made on Saturday, July 13, 2025, during a coordinated intelligence-led operation by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit.
Magaji, a resident of Julirkol village in Silami Local Government Area, is believed to be a key member of the feared Lakurawa gang, which has been linked to multiple violent attacks across Silami, Wamakko, Binji, and Yabo LGAs.
“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being part of the syndicate’s operations and led officers to a bush along the Silami axis, where he had concealed a high-powered rifle,” Rufai said.
A follow-up operation on Tuesday, July 16, led to the recovery of one AK-49 rifle, a magazine, and 22 rounds of live ammunition.
The Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State Command, commended the swift action of the operatives and the role of community members in providing actionable intelligence.
“This arrest and weapons recovery mark a significant step in our efforts to dismantle criminal networks terrorising our communities. We remain committed to rooting out all forms of criminality and restoring peace and safety to Sokoto State,” the Commissioner said.
He assured that investigations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the Lakurawa gang and bring them to justice.
The police urged residents to remain alert and continue to support security efforts by sharing timely and credible information.
