SUDAN MASSIVE LANDSLIDE KILLS OVER 1,000 IN DARFUR, ARMED GROUP REVEALS
Agency report
A “massive landslide” in Sudan’s western Darfur region has claimed the lives of more than 1,000 people, according to a rebel group that controls the area, which reported late Monday that there was just “one survivor.”
The disaster occurred on Sunday after days of relentless rainfall, devastating the village of Tarasin in the Marra mountains, the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army stated.
“Initial information indicates the death of all village residents, estimated to be more than one thousand individuals, with only one survivor,” the group said.
The “massive and devastating” landslide flattened the entire village and “completely destroyed” part of a citrus-producing region.
The group called on the United Nations and other aid agencies to assist with the recovery of the dead.
Sudan’s civil war — now in its third year — has created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with famine declared in parts of Darfur. Fighting has intensified in the region, particularly in El-Fasher, since the army seized control of the capital, Khartoum, in March.
