TRAIN DERAILMENT TRIGGERS NRC REORGANIZATION

The Nigerian Railway Corporation has experienced a considerable management overhaul, shortly after a train incident on the Kaduna-Abuja route resulted in injuries to 20 individuals.
NRC’s Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, disclosed a comprehensive reorganization that encompasses the appointment, reassignment, and retention of district managers and senior officials across the corporation’s operational sectors, as stated in an internal memorandum acquired by our correspondent on Thursday.

Reports indicate that this restructuring, effective September 1, 2025, is part of ongoing initiatives designed to enhance operational efficacy, improve service delivery, and bolster accountability within the corporation. Three new divisions have been established as part of this reorganization: the Business Process, Efficiency and Due Diligence Desk; the Customer Service Desk; and the Corporation’s Statistician Office.
This development aims to fortify business processes and elevate customer engagement.
Noteworthy changes include the reassignment of the former Regional District Manager for the Western District, Ibadan, Nneka Ikwuka, who has transitioned to the role of Coordinator for Freight Services, Lagos–Kano (Narrow Gauge).
Naomi Itajobi, formerly the Assistant Director of Procurement, has been appointed as the new Regional District Manager for the Western District. In Minna, Suleiman Obafunsho, the previous Regional District Manager for the North-West District, has been assigned to NRC Headquarters as Project Coordinator for the Lagos–Kano Narrow Gauge Rehabilitation, with Ilesanmi Ayokunle, the former Assistant Director of Track, succeeding him.
The Eastern District also experienced significant shifts, with Mr. Victor Adanu moving from his role as Regional District Manager, Enugu, to the headquarters as Assistant Director, Train Monitoring and Control. He will be succeeded by Agwonye Ejike, who was previously serving as Chief Accountant.
In Lagos, Augustine Arisa has been reassigned to the position of Coordinator, Locomotive Services and Maintenance, while Rasheed Adewale Adedeji, the former Regional District Manager of the Northern District, Zaria, has taken the helm as Regional District Manager for the Lagos District. Aliyu Mainasara, who previously supervised the North Eastern District, Bauchi, is now the Regional District Manager for Zaria.
Mr. Wilson Obada retains his position as Regional District Manager, North Central District, Bauchi. Additionally, Zirra Marcellinus, formerly the Assistant Director of Operations, has been appointed as Regional District Manager for the North Eastern District.
The Warri–Itakpe corridor also saw tactical reassessments, as Abdulganiyu Sani, previously the Coordinator of WITS, has been redeployed as Coordinator, Freight Services, for the Warri–Itakpe corridor. Wyep Najul, Assistant Director of Operations, now undertakes the role of Coordinator for the Warri–Itakpe Standard Gauge.
Mohammed Ibrahim continues as Manager of the Abuja–Kaduna Train Services.
Other significant appointments include Oyekunle Oyewole as Head of BUPED; Nma Odimkalu, the Chief Internal Auditor, who additionally assumes the role of Coordinator, Freight SG Lagos–Ibadan; and Dennis Ujah, Chief Human Resource Officer (Protocol and Transport), who will also function as Coordinator, Lagos Terminus Business District.
Additional responsibilities have been allocated to A. T. Quadri as Coordinator, Coach and Wagon; Rita Onyiagha as Corporate Head of the new Customer Services Desk; Hamza Abdulradak as Head of Customer Service WITS; and Dauda Akinola as the Corporation’s Statistician.
Nevertheless, attempts to ascertain whether the reorganization was linked to last week’s incident produced no outcome, as neither the managing director nor the corporation’s spokesperson, Callistus Unyimad, replied to inquiries made by our correspondent.
