Stakeholders have expressed growing concern over the rising cases of femicide in Lagos State, warning that the trend poses grave risks to families, communities, and the wider society if left unchecked.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday, they identified domestic violence as a major driver of the disturbing development.

According to Google, femicide refers to the intentional killing of women or girls specifically because of their gender, often carried out by intimate partners or relatives.

Despite ongoing awareness campaigns, reports of violence against women in Nigeria continue to surge.

In a recent incident, Lagos State Police Command arrested a man accused of murdering his girlfriend on September 3 in Oko-Oba.

The suspect allegedly disguised himself as a dispatch rider to gain entry into the victim’s room after she ended their relationship over his abusive behaviour.

He had earlier threatened that no one else would marry her if she rejected him. The suspect reportedly stabbed her to death with a knife.

Stakeholders have called for urgent intervention to curb the menace, stressing that stronger enforcement of laws, increased public awareness, and support systems for victims are critical to protecting women and girls from gender-based violence.
