LAGOS CP WARN OFFICERS AGAINST EXTORTION, PHONE SEARCHES AND RIGHTS ABUSES
By Aishat Momoh. O.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has issued a strong warning to officers against extortion, harassment, human rights violations, and the unprofessional practice of name-calling, particularly targeting youths.
Jimoh gave the directive during a strategic meeting with Deputy Commissioners of Police, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Tactical Commanders, and Heads of Departments, where he emphasized the need for professionalism in policing.
He stressed that crime prevention must be carried out “with a human face,” urging officers not to subject citizens to unnecessary hardship. In particular, he cautioned officers against stopping youths on the road to search their phones, a practice he noted is now prohibited unless the devices are exhibits in established cases under investigation.
“Phone searches must only be conducted in the course of a legitimate investigation within the police station, not on the road,” Jimoh said, adding that such actions must always comply with the law.
Highlighting the Command’s achievements in the past month, the CP announced the arrest of several high-profile suspects, including:
Samsideen Oladiti, alias Shameleon, linked to two violent crimes.
Jude Onouha, leader of a notorious car vandalism gang who disguised as a security guard to gain access to estates.
John Samuel, an ex-convict and hired assassin, arrested for armed robbery and attempted murder while dispossessing a victim of gold jewelry worth millions.
Jimoh said the arrests underscored the Command’s determination to rid Lagos of criminal elements. He urged residents to continue supporting the police by providing credible information that would help keep the state safe.
