The Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro (SAN), on Tuesday marked his second year in office with key achievements in landmark court rulings, justice reforms and revenue recovery.

Speaking at a media briefing in Ikeja, Pedro hailed the Supreme Court judgment that placed lotteries and gaming under state jurisdiction as a “victory for fiscal federalism.” He said contempt proceedings had been filed against the National Assembly for pushing a central gaming bill in defiance of the ruling.

On criminal justice, he cited the conviction of Andrew Nice for the rape and murder of BRT passenger Bamise as proof of Lagos’ commitment to justice. He added that more than N1.5 billion was recovered from a single bank during intensified tax enforcement, while overall recovery efforts had boosted state revenue significantly.

Pedro announced draft bills to reform tenancy and civil procedures, aimed at speeding up trials and balancing landlord-tenant relations. He noted that 263 inmates had been freed under the Governor’s prerogative of mercy, with more cases resolved through plea bargains and restorative justice.

He also highlighted the Lagos Criminal Information System, which has tracked nearly 79,000 cases, and renewed taskforces on land grabbing and human trafficking, which recently secured the return of seven victims from Ghana.

On staff welfare, Pedro pointed to improved office facilities, new buses, robe allowances and dedicated quarters for ministry staff. Agencies such as the Office of the Public Defender and Citizens’ Mediation Centre have also been upgraded to bureaux to strengthen legal aid and dispute resolution.

“Justice in Lagos is not an abstract ideal but a living reality protecting rights and driving growth,” Pedro said, pledging continued reforms anchored on integrity, innovation and impact.
