STRIKE: UMAHI APPEALS TO PENGASSAN TO PUT NIGERIA FIRST

By Sunmisola Shodayo
The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has urged the leadership of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) to halt its nationwide strike in the interest of the nation.
Umahi, in a communiqué issued by his Senior Special Adviser (Media), Orji Uchenna Orji, in Abuja, encouraged the union to allow prudence to guide the resolution of its dispute with the Dangote Group, emphasizing that the strike could adversely impact Nigeria’s recovering economy.
Previously, the Minister assessed sections I and II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway in Lagos State. He was accompanied by public affairs analyst Segun Sowunmi, the Surveyor-General of the Federation, Adeyemi Adebomehin, the Director of Highway Bridges and Design, Engr. Musa Saidu, and the Federal Controller of Works, Engr. Kesha, among others.
Umahi clarified that the inspection was intended to provide stakeholders across party lines the chance to appraise the quality and advancement of the work, as well as to acknowledge President Bola Tinubu’s contributions to the works sector. He noted that the visit would enable them to determine whether the projects constitute substantial investments for Nigeria’s future.
He added that the visit also aimed to reassess the evaluation of additional work submitted by the contractor, Hitech Construction Company Ltd, as compiled by the Department of Roads and Bridges of the Federal Ministry of Works.

The Minister commended the pace and caliber of work being conducted by Hitech, attributing the resolution of technical challenges faced on the project to the contractor’s expertise and dedication to national development.
Umahi revealed that Hitech is poised to construct Nigeria’s largest flyovers at the junction between sections I and II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to alleviate traffic disturbances along the corridor.
He further urged Nigerians to disregard assertions made by “certain content creators” alleging construction failures, labeling them as deceptive and ill-informed.
In response to allegations by Stella Okengwu, who claims to be the CEO of Winhome Real Estate, the Minister challenged her to present evidence of investment in land she purportedly acquired in 2022 for N50 million and verification of approval to develop the land, not to mention her assertions of a $250 million investment.
