US RIGHTS GROUPS URGE REVIEW OF KANU’S DETENTION, CALL FOR DIALOGUE

Three human rights and self-determination advocacy organizations based in the United States have articulated their apprehensions regarding comments made by President Bola Tinubu that alluded to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a collaborative statement issued on Thursday, Advocates for Victims of Injustice and Discrimination (AVID), Rising Sun, and Ambassadors for Self-Determination asserted that the remarks could potentially influence perceptions of ongoing legal issues involving IPOB and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, whose detention and associated legal proceedings remain unresolved.
The organizations urged authorities to focus on countering violent groups responsible for fatalities and displacements across various regions of the country and to ensure that all measures taken align with due process and uphold human rights. They cautioned that prolonged detention and provocative rhetoric might yield adverse effects on public opinion.

The advocacy entities also appealed to the United States Congress, the U. S. Department of State, and the global community to scrutinize Nigeria’s governance and human rights record and to promote peaceful, lawful methods for resolving conflicts.
While reiterating their call for a reassessment of Kanu’s detention in accordance with existing court decisions, the groups advocated for dialogue and reconciliation as productive means to address matters pertaining to self-determination.
