NATIONWIDE STRIKE GROUNDS FLIGHTS, DISRUPTS TRANSPORT IN BELGIUM OVER GOVERNMENT SAVINGS PLAN

A nationwide strike over a government savings plan brought air travel and public transport to a standstill in Belgium on Tuesday, as tens of thousands prepared to march in Brussels to protest proposed austerity measures.
Brussels Airport the country’s largest air hub cancelled all departures after security staff joined the strike. Charleroi Airport, a major European base for Ryanair, also announced it could not operate any flights due to a shortage of personnel.
The strike marks the latest in a wave of industrial actions since Flemish nationalist Bart De Wever became prime minister in February. His coalition government has faced mounting opposition as it moves to implement pension reforms and other cost-cutting measures aimed at addressing a budget deficit that breaches European Union fiscal rules.
“This government promised more sustainable jobs and increased purchasing power. Hot air! And once again, everyone is paying, except the rich,” CSC, a leading trade union, declared in a statement urging mass participation in the demonstration.
The strike also caused significant delays and cancellations on Brussels’ metro, tram, and bus networks. Authorities advised residents to avoid central areas of the capital and use alternative travel options.
The unrest intensifies pressure on De Wever’s administration, which failed to agree on a budget on Monday, prompting the postponement of a key address to parliament.
Trade unions have strongly opposed reforms that include scaling back early retirement benefits and freezing wage indexation. The government is seeking to save about €10 billion ($12 billion) while also increasing defence spending to meet NATO targets.
De Wever’s coalition came to power after protracted negotiations following last year’s federal elections. The protests are expected to escalate if the government proceeds with its austerity agenda.
