Three police officers were killed and 12 people injured in Italy overnight following a powerful explosion at a house during an attempted eviction, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
According to the national fire service, the blast occurred in Castel d’Azzano, near Verona, after the house was filled with gas and detonated when the front door was opened during the operation.
Local media reports from ANSA said police were trying to evict three siblings — a brother and sister in their 60s, and a third family member — who had previously threatened to blow themselves up. Two of them were arrested, while the third fled.
The victims, all police officers, were pulled from the rubble after the explosion, which severely damaged the building. Twelve law enforcement officers and a civilian woman were also injured in the incident.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni led tributes to the fallen officers, expressing condolences to their families and stating she was closely following developments.
The fire service confirmed the casualties in a statement posted on X, adding that emergency services were continuing rescue and recovery operations at the site.
Investigators have launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the explosion and the suspects’ actions leading up to the deadly incident.
