Today (Tuesday), a slight commotion transpired in the Senate as lawmakers declined to support a resolution proposed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, advocating for the return of Nigerian women purportedly mistreated in Libyan correctional facilities.

This episode unfolded during discussions on a motion addressing the violation of the rights of Nigerian expatriates in Libya.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central under the aegis of the Peoples Democratic Party, implored the Senate to take action regarding the dire situation facing Nigerian women thought to be suffering in Libyan jails.

She asserted that numerous women were experiencing sexual exploitation at the hands of prison staff and were coerced into bearing offspring during their incarceration.

Consequently, the senator implored the upper chamber to direct the Nigerian Immigration Service to collaborate with Libyan officials to facilitate their repatriation.

Following her address, Senate President Godswill Akpabio solicited any lawmaker to support the motion, a necessary procedural action prior to further deliberation; however, no senators, including their female counterparts, responded.

The chamber was enveloped in an uncomfortable silence until Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele ultimately rose to second the motion, permitting the proceedings to advance.
