DEFECTIONS SHOW TINUBU’S ONE-PARTY AGENDA TAKING SHAPE — ADC

Read Time:3 Minute, 16 Second

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has asserted that the recent shifts of the governors of Enugu and Bayelsa States to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) validate its longstanding caution that President Bola Tinubu is resolutely intent on transforming Nigeria into a one-party regime.

The party leveled this allegation in a declaration endorsed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, characterizing the departures as a betrayal of the populace and a perilous indication for Nigeria’s democratic framework.

As per the ADC, although the defections may superficially seem to bolster the APC, they actually signify a detriment to democracy and a calculated maneuver by the ruling party to diminish the opposition while consolidating unrestrained authority.

“The recent shifts by the governors of Enugu and Bayelsa States to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) substantiate the African Democratic Congress (ADC)’s enduring admonition that President Bola Tinubu is resolved to convert Nigeria into a one-party state, irrespective of the repercussions for democracy or national coherence,” Abdullahi articulated.

The ADC accused the defecting governors of forsaking their constituents and aligning with a regime that has, in its description, rendered existence ‘miserable’ for the majority of Nigerians.

“While it may appear as though the APC has increased its ranks by gaining more governors, in essence, what has transpired is that these governors have actually deserted their citizenry to collaborate with the ruling party that has made life intolerable for the broader populace,” the ADC remarked.

The party emphasized that Nigerians are already bearing the brunt of the daily inadequacies of the APC administration, citing issues such as insecurity, economic difficulties, and inadequate social welfare as manifestations of misgovernance.

“Nigerians can perceive the current condition of the nation. They endure the APC’s shortcomings every single day. Even those who previously campaigned for the APC or displayed its emblem on their online profiles are now steering clear of any association with the party,” Abdullahi noted.

He further asserted that the Tinubu administration has faltered in all critical governance domains, including security, economic oversight, healthcare, anti-corruption initiatives, and international relations.

“Daily, Nigerians are paying the toll for these shortcomings. Food prices are on the rise, employment opportunities are scarce, and insecurity continues to suffocate all regions of the country,” the ADC declared.

The party condemned the defecting governors for what it termed as an act of historic ‘political apostasy,’ asserting that they have relinquished their role as opposition figures who should have defended the populace and proposed viable alternatives.

“When the ruling party has mismanaged the nation, the sole hope for the people in a democracy is for the opposition to rise in defense, suggest alternative solutions, and guide the populace away from their plight. Instead, they relinquished their responsibilities. And in a moment of historic political apostasy, they opted to align with the grand conspiracy against the Nigerian people,” the party articulated.

Nonetheless, the ADC remains resolute, asserting that the opposition coalition is undeterred by the defections, emphasizing that the distinction between those advocating for national redemption and those pursuing self-serving agendas has become increasingly pronounced.

“While the governing party continues to revel in the defection of these leaders, the ADC and the opposition alliance are equally pleased that the distinction has become even more pronounced between those who are dedicated to salvaging the nation and those who simply aim to benefit from the system,” remarked the ADC.

Abdullahi asserted that the 2027 general elections would transcend a mere political rivalry, transforming into a pivotal confrontation between the Nigerian populace and what he referred to as ‘Tinubu’s faction of governors. ’

“The citizens are aware, and they are poised for action. The year 2027 will present a definitive struggle between the people of Nigeria and President Tinubu along with his coalition of governors within the APC,” he articulated.
