SENATE SCREENS AMUPITAN FOR INEC CHAIR ROLE
The recently appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, is presently appearing before the Senate for his evaluation and affirmation.
Amupitan, who arrived at the National Assembly complex earlier and exchanged greetings with Senators, was accompanied to the chamber by the Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Ododo, along with other notable figures.
At approximately 12:50 p.m., the nominee was escorted into the Senate chamber by the Presidential Adviser on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Abubakar Lado, and was already seated prior to the beginning of the proceedings.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio extended a warm welcome to Amupitan, his relatives, and supporters in the Red Chamber, expressing appreciation for their attendance.
The evaluation process commenced around 12:55 p.m., following Akpabio’s opening statements, during which he delineated the protocols to be adhered to by the legislators in assessing the nominee’s qualifications.
The media previously reported that President Bola Tinubu had nominated Amupitan, a Professor of Law from the University of Jos, to succeed Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who departed from his role.
The President’s letter conveying Amupitan’s nomination was presented on the floor of the Senate by Akpabio during plenary on Tuesday.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Jos, Amupitan is widely acknowledged for his proficiency in constitutional and international law.
Nevertheless, his appointment has elicited mixed reactions from civil society organizations and political stakeholders, with some advocating for reforms aimed at enhancing the independence and transparency of the electoral commission.
The screening session is anticipated to concentrate on Amupitan’s vision for credible elections, his proposals for institutional reforms within INEC, and strategies to enhance the utilization of technology in Nigeria’s electoral process.
Should he be confirmed by the Senate, Amupitan will supervise preparations for upcoming off-cycle governorship elections and establish the foundation for the 2027 general elections.
