The two children have since been placed in a government-approved shelter under the ministry’s supervision, where they are receiving medical attention and psychosocial support. Their mother is reported to be deeply traumatised and has been enrolled for therapy by the ministry’s social welfare unit.

The suspect is currently in police custody and will be charged in court, pending conclusion of investigations. The state reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for sexual and gender-based violence, thanking the Nigeria Police Force for the swift response.

Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, described the act as “heart-wrenching and unacceptable,” and said the state remains unwavering in its commitment to protect every child and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
