SENATE TO SCREEN NEW SERVICE CHIEFS ON WEDNESDAY
The Nigerian Senate will on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, begin the screening of the newly appointed service chiefs nominated by President Bola Tinubu, following a recent shake-up in the nation’s military hierarchy.
President Tinubu had, in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary, requested the upper chamber to confirm the nominees in accordance with the provisions of the Armed Forces Act.
The nominees include Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Waheedi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff, Kennedy Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Emmanuel Undiendeye as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
Akpabio subsequently referred the nominations to the Senate Committee of the Whole, which will conduct the screening before the final confirmation vote.

The appointments come just days after the Presidency announced a major military reshuffle on October 24, which saw the replacement of former service chiefs in what the government described as part of efforts to strengthen national security and improve coordination among the armed forces.
The screening exercise is expected to assess the professional credentials, strategic vision, and leadership capabilities of the nominees as Nigeria continues to grapple with multiple security challenges, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, and separatist agitation in the South-East.
The Senate is expected to expedite the process to ensure a seamless transition in military leadership and sustain ongoing operations across the country.
If confirmed, the new service chiefs will be officially sworn in and expected to provide fresh direction in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity.
