Moroccan football delivered a powerful statement at the 2025 CAF Awards in Rabat as defender Achraf Hakimi was crowned African Player of the Year, becoming the first defender in 52 years to claim the prestigious honour.

His triumph capped a dominant night for Morocco.

After back-to-back near misses in 2023 and 2024 — when Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman finished ahead of him — the 27-year-old Paris Saint-Germain full-back finally reached the pinnacle, securing Africa’s highest individual accolade.

Hakimi’s win ends Morocco’s long wait for the award, making him the nation’s first recipient since Mustapha Hadji in 1998 and placing him among the very few defenders ever honoured in the award’s modern history.

Morocco’s success continued as Ghizlane Chebbak clinched the Women’s Player of the Year prize, while Yassine Bounou was named Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year.

The ceremony, held on Wednesday at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Rabat, also spotlighted rising stars: Othmane Maamma was awarded Men’s Young Player of the Year, and Doha El Madani earned the Women’s Youth Player trophy.

In the coaching category, Cape Verde’s Bubista was named Men’s Coach of the Year, while Pyramids FC claimed their first-ever Club of the Year title.

Nigeria also recorded major wins, with the Super Falcons emerging as the Women’s Team of the Year and Brighton goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie securing the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award for the third consecutive time.
