The Taraba State Police Command has debunked reports circulating on social media alleging that a police officer was apprehended alongside suspected militias in Karim Lamido Local Government Area on Sunday.
In a statement issued by the Acting Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Victor Mshelizah, the command clarified that the officer in question was on official duty at the Usmanu outstation in Karim Lamido when the alleged incident occurred.
According to the statement, the officer was performing routine surveillance in full uniform and did not engage in any unlawful activity or association with criminal groups.
“Preliminary investigations confirmed that he was arrested within his jurisdiction while carrying out duties amid unrest. While others fled, he remained at his post as a police officer and fully cooperated with the military team that arrived,” the statement read.
The police emphasised that the officer was not found in possession of illegal weapons or contraband and that no evidence links him to any wrongdoing. The matter is currently under internal review to establish full details.
The command, led by Commissioner of Police CP Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimeyin, affirmed its commitment to professionalism, integrity and accountability under the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.
“Any attempt to tarnish the image of dedicated officers through baseless allegations will not be tolerated,” the statement warned, adding that legal action may be taken against those spreading disinformation.
The police urged members of the public to rely on verified and official sources of information and to report concerns through appropriate channels.
The command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and ensuring public confidence in law enforcement operations across Taraba State.
