President Bola Tinubu on Saturday met with Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, at the State House in Abuja to review ongoing security operations in the North-West and the rescue of pupils abducted earlier this month.
Speaking after the closed-door meeting, Governor Idris said discussions focused on the “successful rescue” of students kidnapped from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area on November 17.
“I thanked Mr President for his leadership and decisive action in ensuring their safe return. His unwavering support and commitment to Kebbi State’s security are truly commendable,” the governor stated in a post on his official X handle.
He also commended the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, for coordinating the mission.
According to Idris, security and intelligence agencies mobilised immediately on President Tinubu’s orders, leading to the rescue of the girls on November 26. The students were formally handed over to their families at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi.
The meeting came amid heightened concerns over renewed attacks and kidnapping of schoolchildren by armed gangs across the North-West and North Central regions.
On November 17, armed men stormed the secondary school in Maga town, abducting 25 female students. One of them reportedly escaped the same day.
The incident reignited national fears over school safety, echoing the 2014 abduction of 276 students from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, in Borno State.
President Tinubu has since reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding schools and curbing the rising wave of kidnap-for-ransom operations targeting educational institutions.
