The Federal Government has directed the immediate commencement of palliative repairs on the Lagos–Ota–Abeokuta Road to address critical failures and ease traffic congestion along the corridor.

The directive was issued by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, during an inspection of the federal highway linking Lagos and Ogun states.

Umahi disclosed that while about 22 kilometres of the road were assessed, remedial works would concentrate on approximately 18 kilometres identified as the most severely distressed sections. He explained that the Federal Government is already undertaking construction on about 60 kilometres of the corridor, with works being executed in phases according to urgency.

The minister attributed the road’s deterioration to unresolved concession issues and improper engineering parameters adopted during previous construction works.

According to him, repairs will begin immediately, largely during night hours, and will focus on sections that currently impede the smooth flow of traffic. He noted that low-lying failed portions would be reconstructed with concrete to ensure long-term durability.

Umahi observed that the Ota-bound carriageway has suffered more extensive damage than the Lagos-bound side.

He added that the second phase of the project would include full resurfacing of the road, replacement of bridge expansion joints, and the installation of solar-powered streetlights.

The minister assured that upon completion of the ongoing works, the concessionaire would be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the road.
