US police have arrested former world champion boxer Gervonta Davis in Miami following allegations made by his former partner, who accused him of physical assault, kidnapping and emotional abuse.
The Miami Police Department confirmed on social media that the 31-year-old was taken into custody on Wednesday during a joint operation involving local and federal law enforcement agencies.
According to a complaint filed by Courtney Rossel, the incident occurred on October 27 at a strip club where she was working. She alleged that Davis confronted her at the venue, forced her outside, dragged her to a car park and assaulted her by grabbing her neck, pushing her and striking her on the back of the head.
Davis, who competes in the lightweight division, had been scheduled to face YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami in November, but the bout was cancelled following the allegations. Paul later fought former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in December and was knocked out in the sixth round.
Known by the nickname “Tank” due to his punching power, Davis has won world titles across three weight classes — super featherweight, lightweight and super lightweight. He remains unbeaten in his professional career, with 30 wins, including 28 knockouts, and one draw.
This is not the first time Davis has faced accusations of assault or domestic violence. In July last year, he was arrested on battery and domestic violence charges over an alleged incident involving the mother of his two children. Those charges were later dropped after she declined to pursue the case.
In 2023, Davis also served 44 days in jail after pleading guilty to a hit-and-run offence stemming from a crash three years earlier that left four people hospitalised.
