A report from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has revealed that at least 173 people lost their lives in 1,156 emergencies across Lagos State in 2025.

The agency stated that it is fully prepared to respond to emergencies across the state in the new year.

Analysis of the statistics, obtained on Sunday, indicated a decrease in the number of emergencies compared to 2024.

The report detailed 394 road traffic accidents, 249 tanker- and truck-related incidents, and 204 fire outbreaks recorded during the year.

The report showed that, on a monthly basis, February 2025 recorded the highest number of emergencies with 122 cases, followed closely by April with 121 incidents and May with 119 cases.

It also highlighted that Alimosho Local Government Area had the highest number of emergencies at 180 cases, followed by Eti-Osa with 144 cases and Ikeja with 139 cases.

The report further stated, “Between January 1 and December 30, 2025, data from LASEMA’s Pre-Hospital Care Unit operations indicate that 1,924 victims were rescued and resuscitated during the period under review.”

“This total comprises 906 adult males, 1,003 adult females, 13 boys, and two girls.

“In the same period, the agency recorded 173 recoveries (deaths). Out of this number, 139 were adult males, 32 were adult females, while two boys were recovered dead.”

Meanwhile, the LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency was fully prepared to respond to emergencies in 2026.

Speaking at a retreat organised for staff of the agency on Friday, Oke-Osanyintolu said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had provided the necessary support to strengthen the agency’s capacity to mitigate disasters across the state.

He said the retreat was also organised to appreciate staff for their efforts in 2025 and to re-energise them ahead of the tasks in 2026.

“Our chosen theme at this year’s off-site gathering, ‘Building a Resilient and Efficient LASEMA: Strengthening Preparedness, Response and Recovery in Lagos State,’ speaks directly to the role each of you plays quietly every day, often behind the scenes, yet critically important.

“Let me state clearly that LASEMA’s strength does not lie only in equipment, technology, or leadership titles. The agency’s strength lies in the commitment, discipline, and professionalism of its workforce, especially our junior staff,” he said.

Oke-Osanyintolu reiterated LASEMA’s dedication to disaster prevention and management across Lagos State.

He stated, “As the coordinating agency for all emergencies in Lagos State under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, LASEMA is well-equipped in terms of infrastructure and is prioritising the welfare of first responders to safeguard residents.

“While the government continues to play its role, residents must also cooperate with us and recognise that their safety is a shared responsibility,” he added.

He concluded by urging citizens to refrain from unsafe practices that could trigger emergencies.
