LAGOS GOVT ORGANIZES SEMINAR FOR PARENTS, CAREGIVERS OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

…… reiterates the ministry’s commitment to support families of children with special needs

The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, on Thursday, held a seminar for parents and caregivers of children with special needs in the Special Schools and Inclusive Units.

The seminar, themed “Rekindling the Hope of Parents of Children with Special Needs,” was held at the Education Resource Centre (ERC), Ojodu-Berger, Lagos.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, while delivering her opening address, welcomed parents, caregivers, teachers, and other stakeholders to the seminar. She encouraged participants to remain grateful and hopeful, while stressing that every child is unique and special in their own way.

She further reiterated the ministry’s commitment to supporting children with special needs and their families.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, in his speech commended the developmental efforts of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in strengthening the education sector, particularly special education.

He highlighted the importance of stakeholder engagement and feedback to improve service delivery in Special Schools and Inclusive Units, noting that continuous collaboration is necessary to enhance effectiveness and efficiency.

However, the guest speaker, Professor Olufemi Adeniyi of the University of Lagos, a specialist in Special Education, who gave an enlightening lecture on the importance of parental support, understanding and encouragement for children with special needs, emphasized the need for strong parent-child attachment and attentive care.

He also noted that every child has unique needs that require patience and understanding, while citing notable global figures like former US president, Franklin D. Roosevelt and renowned Musician Stevie Wonder, who overcame disabilities to achieve greatness, as a word of inspiration to parents and caregivers, in order not to limit the potential of their children.

The event also featured a panel session where the panelists, Professor Olufemi Adeniyi, Mrs Oyindamola Olamide and Mrs Olubukola Ayinde, gave response to questions from participants on the practical ways to support children with special needs at home and in school environments.

This session provided parents and caregivers with valuable insights and guidance on how best to care for the children.

The seminar concluded with closing prayers offered by one of the parent, marking the end of a successful and impactful engagement aimed at empowering parents and caregivers of children with special needs in Lagos State.
