Suspected armed herdsmen on Friday afternoon attacked Anwase Market in Mbaikyor, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, abducting several women and setting the market on fire.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers descended on the community from a nearby mountain, firing shots indiscriminately to create panic before torching market stalls and kidnapping women.

The media learnt that the assailants fled with the victims toward the mountainous area before security operatives arrived at the scene.

A resident told our correspondent that the market had already been razed by fire before locals could mount any form of resistance, noting that many traders escaped by fleeing in different directions.

Efforts to reach the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer through calls and messages proved unsuccessful.
