In a separate statement, international and domestic authorities described the attack, which left around 75 people dead and many others injured, as “heinous.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in a post on X, said: “I strongly condemn the terrorist attack of 3 February in Kwara State, Nigeria. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and government of Nigeria. I wish a speedy recovery to the injured.”

The United States Mission in Nigeria also condemned the assault, stating: “The United States condemns the horrific attack in Kwara State, which claimed the lives of over 160 people, with the death toll still unconfirmed and many unaccounted for. We express our deepest condolences to the families affected by this senseless violence. We welcome President Tinubu’s directive to deploy security forces to protect local communities and provide assistance to victims, and we support efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

The Turkish government expressed deep sorrow over the attack, saying: “We strongly condemn this heinous act and extend our condolences to the families of the deceased and the people of Nigeria. Türkiye will continue to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism,” according to a statement from its Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The attack occurred on Tuesday when gunmen targeted Woro and the neighbouring Nuku communities, killing at least 75 people, burning shops and a traditional ruler’s residence, and forcing residents to flee. Some reports suggest that the casualty figures may be higher.

Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police ordered the immediate deployment of tactical, operational, and intelligence units to Kaiama Local Government Area. The Nigerian Police Force condemned the attack as tragic and confirmed that a manhunt is underway to apprehend those responsible.

Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq described the attack as a “pure massacre” and confirmed that at least 75 victims had already been buried. President Bola Tinubu has directed the deployment of an army battalion under Operation Savannah Shield to reinforce security in the state.

Political groups, including a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Northern States Governors’ Forum, have also condemned the killings, describing them as barbaric and a reflection of worsening insecurity in the region.
