USMAN-LED CARETAKER COMMITEE TAKES OVER LP NATIONAL SECRETARIAT

BY JENN NOMAMIUKOR
The Labour Party‘s national caretaker committee, led by Nenadi Usman, restarted its activities at the party‘s national secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday.
This came after a federal high court decision that supported the leadership of Usman’s group. Peter Lifu, the judge in charge, said that the evidence presented in court shows that Julius Abure, the national chairman of the LP, has completed his term.
He also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the Usman-led wing of the party.
On Tuesday, Usman and her team went to the Utako district secretariat around 11 am. This location was previously controlled by the Julius Abure-led national working committee (NWC). This event marks the end of a long disagreement between the two groups.

The conflict had gone all the way to the supreme court, but it was later taken up by the federal high court, which supported Usman’s caretaker committee.
INEC recently accepted the group led by Usman. But the Abure group didn’t agree with the court‘s decision or INEC’s approval, and they said they will fight the ruling in a higher court.
Obiora Ifoh, national publicity secretary of the Abure-led faction, said the court misinterpreted the April 4, 2025, decision of the supreme court in arriving at its judgement.
He said the ruling contradicted the apex court’s position that no court has the power to appoint leaders for a political party because leadership matters are internal affairs.
Since 2023, LP has been embroiled in a leadership crisis with two factions — Abure’s and the Usman-led committee — battling for the soul of the party.
