Tragedy struck on Saturday following a clash between members of the Benue and Hausa communities at a fruit market in Oil Mill, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, resulting in the death of one person.

The incident occurred at about 7:00 a.m. at the Fruit Market, Oil Mill, Rumuokwurusi, Port Harcourt.

According to the Rivers State Police Command, trouble began when a trader attempted to create space for his goods and asked a wheelbarrow pusher, identified as Zakara Afaaruwu, to move his wheelbarrow, which was allegedly obstructing the area.

The request was reportedly refused, leading to an argument that attracted other traders and bystanders.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Saturday, the police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, a Chief Superintendent of Police, said the disagreement escalated when the wheelbarrow pusher allegedly produced a dagger and stabbed the trader.

The victim, identified as Higightor Wenem, 30, from Mbagel Village in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, was rushed to the Military Hospital but was confirmed dead by a doctor.

The police said the incident sparked tension and pandemonium between members of the Hausa and Benue communities in the area.

However, prompt intervention by police operatives restored calm and prevented further breakdown of law and order.

The suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody, while investigation continues. The victim’s body has been deposited in the morgue for autopsy.

The command assured residents that the situation is under control and that monitoring of the area is ongoing, urging members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding.
