The four worshippers regained their freedom on Monday evening in Ilado community after their families reportedly paid a ₦9 million ransom to the abductors.
A family source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the kidnappers had initially demanded ₦40 million for each victim’s release. However, following prolonged negotiations between the victims’ relatives and the abductors, the ransom was reduced to ₦9 million.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, the Ondo State Police Command stated that a joint operation involving the police, the Nigerian Army, and local vigilantes was immediately launched in response to the attack.
He explained that following the attack, the Command swiftly initiated a rescue mission in partnership with the Nigerian Army and local vigilantes. He added that one of the kidnapped worshippers was successfully rescued and a suspect apprehended.
According to the Command’s spokesperson, security operatives are still pursuing the fleeing abductors.
The incident occurred on February 25, 2026, when gunmen believed to be kidnappers stormed the church during an early morning prayer service and abducted six worshippers.
Kidnapping incidents have surged across Ondo State since January 2026, with Akure North and Owo Local Government Areas, as well as the Akoko axis in the northern region of the state, particularly affected.
Recently, the State Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, revealed that the command has apprehended 256 criminal suspects across different parts of the state since the start of the year, including 30 individuals linked to kidnapping.
