FIRE RAZES SIX SHOPS, DESTROYS GOODS WORTH MILLIONS AT KWARA MARKET

A fire outbreak has razed six shops and destroyed goods worth millions of naira at Owode Market in Offa, Kwara State.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when a fire, reportedly sparked by bush burning, spread to parts of the market in the Isale Oja area of the town.
The development was confirmed in a statement on Thursday by DSF Jimoh Modibbo Ibrahim, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Fire Service, Kwara State Command, and shared with The Media in Ilorin.
According to the statement, firefighters from the Offa Command of the Federal Fire Service promptly responded to the emergency.
“The Federal Fire Service, Kwara State Command, led by State Controller ACF Mary Bakare, through its Offa Command and under the directive of Area Commander SF Ali Sikiru, promptly responded on March 11, 2026, to a fire outbreak at Owode Market, Isale Oja, Offa, Kwara State,” the statement read.
“Upon reaching the scene, the firefighting team, led by ASF II Adedeji, quickly brought the fire under control using a medium water jet from FFS 293.
“Comprehensive overhauling operations were then carried out to prevent any possible re-ignition,” the statement added.
He stated that preliminary investigations indicated the fire was triggered by bush burning, which subsequently spread to nearby shops within the market.
Although no lives were lost, the spokesperson revealed that the blaze destroyed six shops and a large hall stocked with food items such as rice, beans, soybeans, yams, and potatoes, as well as wheelbarrows and planks used for construction purposes.

He added that the value of the property destroyed was estimated at around ₦15 million, while goods and structures worth approximately ₦45 million were saved thanks to the prompt intervention of the firefighters.
“The estimated value of property damaged is ₦15 million, while assets worth about ₦45 million were saved thanks to the swift intervention of firefighters from the Federal Fire Service, Kwara State Command,” Ibrahim stated.
He added, “The Command remains fully committed to protecting lives and property and urges the public to strictly follow fire safety precautions.
“Members of the public are specifically advised against uncontrolled bush burning, should ensure proper maintenance of electrical appliances, and must adhere to other essential fire safety measures,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, The Media reports that in January, an early morning fire also destroyed parts of the livestock section of Owode Market, razing at least ten stalls and causing panic among traders and residents who struggled to prevent the blaze from spreading further.
