Mikel Arteta hailed Max Dowman becoming the Premier League’s youngest-ever goalscorer as a “magical moment” after Arsenal FC scored late to defeat Everton FC 2-0 on Saturday.

The Gunners moved closer to their first Premier League title in 22 years after Dowman set up Viktor Gyokeres, who broke the deadlock in the 89th minute.

Dowman then capped the win by racing from deep inside his own half to score into an empty net after Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had advanced for a corner during stoppage time.

At 16 years and 73 days old, Dowman became the youngest scorer in Premier League history. This season alone, he had already set records as Arsenal’s youngest-ever starter and the youngest player in the UEFA Champions League, both achieved while he was still 15.

“It was a great moment, especially with the way the goal developed. We had 10 or 15 seconds to really enjoy what was about to happen,” Arteta said.

“It was magical, with everyone on the bench and the players jumping with the crowd—it was a beautiful day.”

The win gave Arsenal a 10-point lead over Manchester City FC, who have two games in hand, at the top of the table.

However, for much of the match, Arsenal lacked creativity until Dowman was brought on from the bench 16 minutes from time.

“He changed the game every time he touched the ball. He made things happen, and we looked like more of a threat,” Arteta added.

“To do that at his age, under this pressure and expectation to win, it’s extraordinary. It’s natural for him—he doesn’t feel the pressure. He plays instinctively, and with talent like his, great things are bound to come.”

Gyokeres also made an impact after being overlooked in favour of Kai Havertz, positioning himself perfectly to tap in after Pickford was caught under Dowman’s cross, the ball deflecting off Piero Hincapie.

The tension in Emirates Stadium was released as Arteta celebrated wildly following both goals, although he commended his team for keeping composure in a high-stakes title race.

“There are times when you have to be patient. Despite dominating and creating chances, the anxiety builds when you don’t score,” he said.

“You have to stay composed, stay relentless, and create opportunities. The team showed spirit today.”
