University of Ilorin and Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) have set up a joint strategic committee aimed at deepening collaboration between both institutions.

This was disclosed in a statement released on Saturday by the university’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, following a meeting between representatives of the two organisations at the NNPC Towers in Abuja last Wednesday.

According to the statement, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Wahab Egbewole (SAN), led the institution’s delegation, while the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, headed the company’s team.

Akogun said discussions during the meeting centred on plans to establish a Centre of Excellence at the University of Ilorin focused on practical engineering and technology-driven research.

The proposed centre, he noted, is expected to be the first of its kind in West Africa.

The meeting also examined the possibility of creating an NNPCL Professorial Chair at the university to encourage industry-driven research and enhance academic expertise in critical areas of the energy sector.

“The joint committee, which will work out the framework for the partnership, is expected to present its report within four weeks,” the statement added.

Members of the University of Ilorin delegation also included the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Mukhtar Adeiza Etudaiye; the Registrar, Mansur Adeleke Alfanla; and the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Joshua Olaoye, among others.
