The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Father Adasu University, Makurdi, has threatened to commence industrial action over unresolved welfare concerns affecting its academic staff.

The union identified the key issues as unpaid salary arrears, promotion entitlements, and alleged irregularities in pension remittances.

ASUU communicated its stance in a statement issued on Saturday in Makurdi, signed by the branch secretary, Prof. Daniel Chile.

The union added that multiple attempts to engage the university administration on these matters have so far failed to yield any concrete commitments.

According to the union, the ASUU congress, held on January 20, directed the branch executive committee to formally remind the university management of long-standing welfare matters affecting staff.

“Among the major concerns raised are the outstanding balance of 22 months of arrears linked to the implementation of the national minimum wage and the 25/35 per cent wage award.

“Promotion arrears owed to some staff members dating back to 2018, and inconsistencies in the remittance of contributory pension deductions to staff pension accounts.

“The union also highlighted shortfalls and omissions in the payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) to certain lecturers,” the communique stated.

According to the union, following a resolution at its congress, its leadership met with the university management to address the issues, but no clear timeline for resolution was provided.

The union further revealed that it had submitted the 2025 ASUU–Federal Government agreement to the university management for the second time under the current vice-chancellor’s administration.

It warned that continued delays could prompt stronger measures.

The statement noted that if substantial progress remains unattainable, the union would be compelled to invoke the mechanisms available under its rules and traditions, including the possibility of industrial action.

The union added that the matter could also be escalated to the next National Executive Council meeting to press for strike action, noting that the zonal leadership has already begun consultations regarding the situation.
