PETER OBI EXPRESSES SADNESS OVER DEATH OF HENRY NWOSU

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed sorrow over the death of Nigerian football icon Henry Nwosu.
In a message posted on his verified X account on Saturday, Obi said he was deeply saddened by the passing of the former Nigeria national football team star, describing him as one of the patriots he admired watching while growing up.
The media had earlier reported that Nwosu died at the age of 62.
Obi noted that the late football legend devoted his talent and passion to uplifting the nation through his performances on the field, adding that Nigeria would always remain grateful for his contribution to the country’s football history.

“I received with deep sadness the news of the passing of Nigerian football legend Henry Nwosu. He was one of the great patriots I admired watching as a child. Through his talent and dedication, he lifted the spirit of our nation on the football field,” Obi wrote.
He also recalled Nwosu’s role in Nigeria’s triumph at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, noting that the achievement created unforgettable moments that united Nigerians.
“As a key member of the team that secured victory for Nigeria at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations when I was just 18, he helped create memories that brought Nigerians together across all divides, reminding us that sport can inspire hope, pride, and national unity,” he added.
Obi extended his condolences to Nwosu’s family, friends, and the Nigerian football community, praying for strength for those grieving the loss and eternal rest for the departed legend.
“May his legacy continue to inspire young Nigerians to serve the nation with excellence and humility,” he said.
