The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has advised students in Enugu State to shun internet fraud, stay committed to their studies, and develop digital skills to secure their future.

He gave the advice during visits to the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) and New Heaven Community Secondary School, as part of the Commission’s preventive and educational outreach.

According to a post on the EFCC’s X handle on Tuesday, Olukoyede—represented at IMT by Superintendent Paul Ikpor, Head of Public Affairs at the EFCC’s Enugu Zonal Directorate—warned that although cybercrime may appear profitable, it ultimately ruins careers, damages reputations, and limits personal freedom.

He stressed that cybercrime is a serious offence with strict legal consequences, noting that many youths involved in internet fraud end up arrested, prosecuted, and possibly imprisoned, thereby cutting short their ambitions and causing hardship for their families.

Olukoyede urged the students to prioritise education and skill acquisition as the sure path to lasting success. He encouraged them to explore opportunities in fields such as software development, cybersecurity, digital marketing, graphic design, and other high-demand areas within the global technology space.

At New Heaven Community Secondary School, he highlighted the importance of integrity and innovation, calling on students to use technology for positive development rather than criminal activities.

He described integrity as a vital value for future leaders, adding that cultivating honesty and accountability early in life would help them grow into responsible citizens who can contribute meaningfully to national development.

Labeling cybercrime as “the fastest form of self-destruction,” he reminded the students of their role as future leaders and urged them to embrace responsibility, respect for the law, and strong ethical values.

He concluded by encouraging them to become ambassadors of integrity in their schools and communities by rejecting internet fraud and embracing hard work, discipline, and lawful means of success.
