ATIKU HOSTS KWANKWASO IN ABUJA AHEAD OF EXPECTED DEFECTON TO ADC

Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, on Saturday hosted former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his residence in Abuja amid indications of an imminent political realignment.
Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP), is expected to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the coming days.
Confirming the visit via his official X handle, Atiku described it as a courtesy call, noting that both leaders held extensive discussions on national issues. “We had a robust discussion on the state of the nation,” he said.
The meeting comes shortly after the National Secretary of the ADC and former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, also visited Kwankwaso in Abuja, further fuelling speculation about his planned defection.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement has confirmed that Kwankwaso will formally join the ADC on Monday, March 30, 2026, at Gidan Kwakwasiya in Kano, marking his exit from the NNPP — a party he played a pivotal role in building.
The development signals a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Kwankwaso’s move expected to reshape alliances, particularly in the northern region.
Speculation intensified during the recent Kwankwasiyya Eid festival in Kano, where supporters openly chanted the name of former Anambra State Governor and ex-Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Kwankwaso’s presence — a moment both leaders acknowledged during brief remarks.
Analysts believe the unfolding developments could trigger broader political realignments as key actors begin positioning ahead of the next electoral cycle.
